Pet peeve #327: as for technical inaccuracy, I've never understood why
Hollywood, Inc. finds it so difficult to get it "right". The type of
movie in question has a built-in audience of BA and mil-surp guys (who
are themselves mil-surp); so why do they seem to go out of their way to
insult our intelligence? I will admit that "Saving Ryans Privates" was
a good deal better in this respect ...
As for the vile language and sex, I simply wait for the movie to show
up on broadcast, where it's largely edited out. Tho it takes longer now
than it used to, it's better than spending $$$$ and then having to slink
out feeling dirty ...
I've wondered: where does the prop dept. get the radios, etc., they
use? Is there a liability issue that makes then hesitant to rent or
borrow all the pieces? And even when they list a valid consultant, do
they simply not listen if it looks like it's going to cost a few pennies
extra? As much as I enjoyed seeing it, why WOULD a BC-654 be set up on
the veranda without a power supply?!
Strange: if the radio is depicted as being in use, you often don't get
a good look at it; if it's for visual effect, it's so incomplete as to
be unusable. Think: do they leave the bolt out of the guns they pretend
to shoot?! Fenders off the jeeps they drive around?! Which reminds
me, as someone commented recently, the props in war movies tend to be in
better shape than the real thing often was ... e
