Greetings to all the milsurplus list members!
First, I wanted to say thanks for making the management of this list easy!
Everyone maintains a good attitude here and for the most part keeps on
topic.
Occasionally I post the following for new members and to fresh the brain
cells of our long time members.
Here a some of the more common problems that you can help me with:
1) Milsurplus messages sent to you are bouncing:
Whenever the mailman program gets a bounced message reply from your
provider, it keeps track of how many and how long this has occurred. If it
cannot get messages to you it will eventually remove your membership
automatically. I recently increased this from 5 days to 10 days. However,
people are still being removed. If this happens to you, you may always
rejoin once the email delivery problem is resolved.
** Users that have email disk space limits. Please keep your inbox cleaned
out, then you won't bounce so often *
2) Non-member submissions are forbidden: *** This is occurring at an
alarming rate lately ***
If you are not a member (reading the messages off the website) and respond
to the list, your message will not be sent out. Also, in some cases, users
subscribe with one account that auto-forwards to their home account. When
you respond, it must be from the subscribed account name.
3) HTML or other 'fancy' text fonts & attachments
This list does not allow any HTML or other fancy text or attachments.
Messages containing HTML will be deleted automatically. Please send in plain
ole text format and everything will go through. Dont forget that fancy
signatures also contain HTML.
4) User unknown or invalid account
We have members who subscribe and then disappear. If you subscribe, please
take the time to unsubscribe before you vanish or change email addresses.
Invalid users are immediately purged from the membership ranks.
5) Taboo words.
The mailman parses your subject and message content for words that are not
allowed. Besides profanity, some of the words it looks for are
s-u-b-s-c-r-i-b-e and h-e-l-p. If it finds these, the message goes to me
instead of the remailer. Remember this if you type a subject line or message
asking for h-e-l-p.....
6) Duplication of message content.
If you are replying to a message, please please snip out what you are
responding to and DELETE the rest of the message. This is common courtesy.
There are hundreds of users on this list. Every unnecessary single word or
letter you keep in the message is multiplied by hundreds that the qth.net
center has to send out over the net. We all got the first message; there is
no need for you to resend the entire context again.
7) Electronic Bidding Sites
This list (and 99% of QTH.NET) does not support making references to the
latest gizmo for only 25 cents bid you've seen on one of 'those' sites.
There is a single specific remailer on QTH.NET that supports this. This is a
QTH.NET rule, not mine.
8) Changing your subscription options and unsubscribing from this list:
The web page for users of your mailing list is
http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/milsurplus
To change your subscription (set options like digest and delivery modes, get
a reminder of your password, or unsubscribe from Milsurplus), enter your
subscription email address on the above page.
I get a lot of emails from users asking to unsubscribe. Please first try to
do it yourself. If you have troubles, then email me. Also, each month you
are emailed a reminder of what your password is to access the web page.
Please keep a copy of that email handy.
9) Flaming
This list does not tolerate flaming of other individuals. Violators will be
warned and/or removed from the list. 99.9% of the time, we have a nice
friendly list here. Once in a long while we have a problem. Please keep it
civil.
10) Keeping on topic
Occasionally someone will stray from the focus area of this list, Military
Surplus Radios. Postings from subscribers are automatically sent to the
list. No one wants to have a moderated list. So please try to stay on topic.
If it gets out of hand, a growing number of users get upset and then I have
to take action. If you are in doubt about a topic, you are welcome to
privately email me first to see if it is appropriate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
That is about it for now. Again thanks for helping this list be a great
success. We have a large and growing number of military radio collectors &
users on the list. The knowledge base is tremendous!
