Kurt:

The current ANSI drawing for D cells ( actually ANSI-NEDA-13x, IEC-R20)
shows the following dimensions:

Diameter: 34.1 to 32.5 mm, or 1.280 to 1.343 inches

Length, top 58.7 to 61.1 mm, or 2.311 to 2.406 inches,
plus bottom ridge 0.4 to 0.9 mm or 0.016 to 0.035 inches,
so max tip to bottom ridge could be anywhere from
59.1 to 62 mm or 2.327 to 2.451 inches overall
Body length 56.3 to 57.9 mm, or 2.217 to 2.280 inches.

Unfortunately, I don't have the same information from 1944.

I suspect the change came about when the outer protective case was added
to reduce leakage and damage, particularly from the alkaline
formulations. I'm not sure anyone still manufactures a plain LeClanche
system D cell without the outer steel shell. Let us know what you find
in the marketplace.
