Well, several of you asked, on or off line, so the sanatized version (no
names) goes like this. For the benefit of those of you who don't know the
background, on Memorial Day, 1999, someone broke into my storage building
and stole a complete SCR-284 less the vehicular only components, and parts
of an SCR-694 and AN/GRC-9 (the latter two were a bit more scattered out in
the storage building, plus some components were still at home where I had
been sorting out the sets).
A man, call him Father, was attending a 4th of July celebration in a small
town on the east side of Houston, and was looking at an AN/GRC-9 that
someone had set up for display. Another man, Finder, comes up and says
that he has a radio like that. Found it in an abandoned house that he had
been hired to clean out. Father gets a name and phone number where Finder
can be reached, and about a week or so later, buys what Finder brings out
for $100. Fathers Son is an HPD detective, and also an MV collector known
to me (I've sold or repaired GRC stuff for his M38A1). Son calls Friend to
come over and look at the radio goodies that Father bought. Friend is a
member of the same MV club that I am, and has just received my list of
stolen items (the club's newsletter editor being out of the country, it
didn't get sent it out until the first of July). Everything that Father
had bought was on the list, except for an RM-29-A that I had failed to
notice was missing.
The next morning, Son calls me and I drive across Houston, reimburse
Father, and carry the bits and pieces home, most somewhat the worse for
their experience. Son is supposed to notify the Burglary Division officer
assigned to my case. The first time that I checked on it, nothing has been
done yet. The next time, Father has lost the phone number and name of
Finder. RIP.
Oh, yeah, Page 2. Finder told Father that he thought he had the missing
case for the RT-77A. Father was supposed to call him and try to get it,
and didn't, I'm told, because someone in HPD thought it might interfere
with the "investigation". @#$%^
