Tino:

As a early post-WW2 equipment scrounger, I can confirm that accessories
have always been available in smaller quantities than the equipment
itself. When the ARC-5s were in great supply in the 40s and 50s, I
recall one article in a ham magazine which included instructions on how
to force a certain size copper tubing over the tuning spline, as the
chances of obtaining mating splines were usually slim to none. My
personal opinion was the discrepancy was rooted in the difference in
disposal methods for radio (electronic, but we called it all radio back
then) equipment which was greatly different than mechanical equipment,
and the system identified all the gears, shafts, mounts and so forth as
mechanical. Maybe tuning heads also? Then, there were a lot of radios
disposed of which never saw installation, while the aircraft with all the
hardware in them went to salvage intact, or to another country. I have
never had the pleasure of thoroughly exploring the availability of
American surplus in other countries, but I am told that there is (was) a
lot of stuff which is (was) more available elsewhere than here in the
country of manufacture. Then, there was the much discussed effort to
protect American manufacturers after the war by not returning a lot of
the materials which were in the war zones.
