Hi John:

I have an assortment of BC-348's, one of which was substantially modified --
at least as to its appearance -- added S-meter, modern knobs with spun
aluminum inserts, painted a somewhat metallic green -- as if to match other
equipment. It still has its handles, etc.

Is it possible that the handle and tag/label holes were filled? The
original handles had thumbscrews at their tops that had long shafts to
secure the radio to its cabinet. If you look behind the panel, you might
see evidence of that.

T'was fashionable many years ago to modify these and make them look like
something else. Another popular mod was to separate the gain control.
Original was ganged for RF and AF. Often the lamp dimmer pot was replaced
and the wiring for either RF or AF was separated from one of the ganged pots
and jumpered up to what was the dimmer.

If the internal work looks sensible, it might have come from those surplus
conversion manuals that came out in the 40's and 50's. They can still be
found, and might be you're only hope of documentation. Or maybe some old
magazine article. You may be in for some boatanchor archeology. ;-)

Barry
