40 is excellent in the fairly early evening for coast-to-coast
contacts. As soon as the sun goes down in the Pacific, and it gets
better and better for a while, then goes too long.

I wouldn't use color-burst crystals because that is now the major
hangout for the digital crowd and their "water-fall" displays. We
Glowbugs crowd had to move to 3547.5 +/- because of them. 3560
is a national QRP "channel", as is 7040 +/-, but 3560 is also the
Regional Net 7 of NTS (RN7) frequency and has been for at least
40 years, although RN7 sessions (two per evening) only last about
15 minutes at most, at 0330 and 0530 UTC. There is also a QRP
"channel" at 7120. The QRP channels are ALWAYS active and the
QRPers listen for weak signals, unlike most other places.

Oh, humph! No body cares as long as you are there trying. We
Glowbugs crowd will happily, gladly slow down for anyone anytime
as long as necessary.
And anyone who shows up on 3547.5 is most welcome. Heck, we
even tolerate people with solid-state rigs sometimes! ;-) And you
don't even have to be exactly on frequency since our receivers
have tuning controls which allow us to scan up and down the band
a bit, and we know how to use them! ;-)
GB crew starts 0100 to 0200 Z most days. We also use 7050 +/-
SSB QRM regularly and 10050, 14050, and 21050 sometimes.
Come join us.
