I think I got all the subjects strung together ... my copy of TM 11-310 is
a Fair Radio reprint of v.4, Oct '43, and doesn't have the R-100. Fair
being un-fair? Or wrong year?

CQ mag did do a piece on the WS-19, in Feb '57. The schematic and
denigration is repeated in their large-format Surplus Schematics Handbook,
page 66 (it's listed as the "Mark II"). I clearly remember the "radio on a
rope" picture, as I was incensed - and so were a lot of contemporary
readers, as CQ apologized in a subsequent issue, and claimed they didn't
really dunk the set! If anybody cares, I will go foraging in the basement
for it - I recently read my small collection of late 50's/early 60's, and
there's quite a bit of useful info sprinkled amongst the butchery: such as
re-tuning the R-48 to cover 220 (easy).
BTW, Caringella and Clark's Surplus Handbook also calls WS-19 the Mark II:
there's a photo on page 75 and schematic on p76, but they don't disparage
it.

The ammo box reference is OT, but I've turned up what appears to be a WW1
.30 cal box (alas, missing the lid), and since I'm not subscribed to any
appropriate list, wondered if anyone could talk it around for me. It's the
same size, and looks much like the later boxes, but has "Reese", "U.S.",
the "flaming bomb" symbol, and a cartridge-shaped indent on the bottom that
probably indicates which way the belt's installed, as the box has a "foot"
on the front, and is probably not reversable. It has about 60% finish - if
anybody needs this thing, I'll work up a trade list, or take offers.
