Being a retired USAF Senior Master Sergeant who spent a 20 plus
year career in the Army Air Corps and later USAF Air and Airways
Communications Service and its derivatives, I can tell you that
the proto-radar operators were not punished. Even the officers
involved were not punished. That radar station was in a test
mode. Remember it was long before the British and Germans made
radar really work. The radar was not officially in service.
There were no plans in place to use its capabilities, what little
it had. Those guys were trying to see how the radar performed
on the B-17's which were arriving that morning. In those early
days no real planner would put any faith in some weird thing
like radar. They had their acoustic horns to find airplanes
with, didn't they. 73 SMS Whitaker a.k.a. Clete
