[Milsurplus] 19 set thread

What Ben forgets is when the Conversion Manuals were offered, and what a
typical ham station that might use a 19 set in the 50s or 60s consisted of.
Most rigs were home brew with separate receiver and transmitter, and the
transmitter was typically crystal controlled (Novices were legally bound to
be crystal controlled ). So, one would call CQ and then tune around the band
for a response. At least that is what I and my friends used to do.
Transceivers were not available or priced out of a typical teenagers budget.
So, the 19 being way ahead of it's time was almost worthless as it was,
since it is a transceiver. I clearly remember a conversion article in CQ or
73 that shows a modification for a 19. It shows it on the back of a small
row boat with two guys ready to dump it in the water for a boat anchor. So
you could modify one from a radio to a boat anchor. That is how it was
viewed at the time and being there I can appreciate it. Now today is a
different story. Everybody has a transceiver. So using a 19 is a piece of
cake. 73 - Mike
