I can't remember if this subject was hashed (pun intended) out on this list
or on "theporch", but on reading the paperback version of "German Raider
Atlantis" (titled "Under Ten Flags", after the movie starring van Heflin
and Charles Laughton), I found, on page 110, a reference to DF'ing by using
receiver oscillators. I quote the author, Captain Bernhard Rogge: "I used
the Speybank [a ship] to enlarge my patrol area, sending her out as a scout
thirty miles on my flank, whence she could report by a specially arranged
signal. Breuers, her captain, was able to maintain contact with us in a
new and very remarkable way, by taking bearings on the radiations of our
radio receiver. Although the experts said this was impossible, supsequent
[typo in the original] developments proved that Breuers was only too right.
[unfortunately, I could not find where Rogge continued this - it may have
been left out of the paperback version.]
Does anyone have the original version, "German Raider Atlantis"? Hopefully
in German? e
