In the early 50's the USAF was using a very old disk recorder/player
which was made by Ampex.  I knew of only three that they had.  They
recorded and played back facsimile signals (weather maps).  They recorded
from the inside out, and so slow that there was a little microscope aimed
at the heated cutter where the operator could watch the depth and the
deviation of the grove as it was cut.  They ran at 16(?) rpm, and there
were different diameter disks available.  The disks were made of plastic
