Back when History was taught in public schools I learned that during the
forming of the USA a single vote in the Continental Congress made English
the language of choice for the new government.  German came in  second. 
That's how close it was.  German has been and still is a far more exacting
language than any other.  Compound words are formed to clearly indicate
what modifies what, and to clarify by grouping nouns into masculine and
feminine.  Strange, but almost every noun in German that is masculine or
feminine is just the opposite in French.  As for English, "Specific
Inductive Capacity" used to be used in the 1st Class Radiotelphone exam.  As they say,
"The Germans talk in macros."  End non-ICOM.
