Jack:
Back before microwave solid state became a reality, the best receiver you
could build and keep operating in a commercial circuit was a low noise
diode mixer followed by the best gol-danged IF you could manage. WE did
that for the first TD-2 microwave by using the 416Bs in the wideband IF,
and used the same approach in much of the microwave (& radar) gear they
built in the 50s. As H. O. says, the tubes were much sought after for
ham VHF and UHF front ends, and even Nems-Clark used one in a tunable V/U
receiver of the time. Garden variety FETS beat them hands down now, but
at the time they were prized possessions by the lucky few who could trade
for them from a telco friend, or were among the top scroungers in MARS.
One reason so many disappeared is they have a significant amount of
recoverable gold plating which made the gold bugs grab them up faster
than hams. Spec's appear in many publications of the 50s, including ARRL
handbooks, CQ and QST, and probably in the new Tube Lore book devoted to
post '47 WE tubes.
