< Had a chance to use one of there 1 tube radios many years ago.
It was a modulated oscillator using a type 30 tube. Many of the
parts were made in the USA. The radio worked in the 10 meter
band. Not being informed on military equipment at the time I did
not know what I realy had. I borrowed it from a local ham who got
it in the Pacific during WW2. If I remember correctly it was anout
2 inches thick and about 5 inches high. It used a 67.5 volt
battery for B+ and 1.5 Volts for filaments. Ran about 2 watts when
wide open. Only problem was that it FM'ed badly as the oscillator
circuit was not very stable. >>
--Please don't misunderstand me- i don't mean at all to be critical-
but i have some corrections to the above. I am pretty well versed on
this set, as i have at least 1 complete, and the US's manual on it.
NO parts were built in USA, even if they are marked in english. It
runs from 1.5 and 135 volts, from a handcrank generator or batts.
The FM is not a problem, as long as you work to another super-
regen set. Same story with other superregen / modulated oscillators,
such as the USA's BC-222/ 322, TBY, also the 1930s ham rigs such
as Abbot TR-4 and such.
So it seems a bit strange to contemplate it being used in a Japanese
fighter plane - but strange things happened, and many Japanese planes
did not even carry a radio.
