This matter of physically interchangeable but electrically
non-interchangeable parts relates to my recent disgusting discovery of
something others have probably all known for a long time.  I plugged
a handset into a military radio and it works.  I plugged in a different
handset, one that looks about the same and has the same connector but
has a different designation.  It doesn't work - doesn't key the
transmitter.  They are wired different.

So if you are going into battle be sure to take along a technician who
knows which handset works with your radio and which works with your
telephone.  Without that detailed knowledge you will be unable to
communicate.
