Hi John,
I meant to answer your original post but have been too busy. FYI I wasn't
too impressed with PlanePlotter simply because they seem to collect a lot
of money for it but they don't do regular updates to fix bugs etc. What
really unimpressed me was when I went to uninstall it in Windows 7 after
the trial period it appeared remove the program but it still appeared in
Programs and Features and would not fully remove...and when I contacted the
PlanePlotter folks I just wasn't impressed with their "oh well" "too bad"
attitude. Dont get me wrong, some people use PlanePlotter and love it...it
was just my initial experience that wasn't impressive.
Its' not up and running right now but I use the R820 SDR & DVB-T dongle
that I purchased from NooElec along with Virtual Radar and it works quite
well. As far as coverage goes purchase yourself a USB cable extension or 2
and try to get the little antenna outside and up to a rooftop. If you can
do this you will see your range improve dramatically just keep in mind that
there are length limits on USB cables so it can only be so long. I did try
hooking up the dongle to my Scantenna external antenna but the coverage was
actually worse than with the little antenna they provide but a Scantenna
antenna is not an ideal antenna for the dongle frequency range.
My 2 cents for now...happy hunting!
