Tyndall AFB - Two of the T-38 Talons landed at Tyndall Thursday to begin
their new assignment as adversaries to the F-22 Raptor.
One of the oldest aircraft in the Air Force's fleet is finding new _life_

of 20 T-38 jets arrived at Tyndall AFB Thursday afternoon.
The T-38s were fully refurbished at Holloman AFB in New Mexico. Eighteen
more will join them, arriving in pairs each month. They'll be used to fly
against Tyndall pilots training in the F-22 Raptors.
"It's very similar to a scrimmage team for football, the pro-teams need
someone to scrimmage and practice against before the big game" said pilot
Glen Richards.
The T-38s cost less than $2,000 an hour to fly. That's much cheaper than
the F-15s Tyndall was using to simulate the enemy.
"It's the biggest bang for our buck with what we're going to do with it.
It's gonna help us train raptor pilots in a very cost effective manner" said
pilot Ron Miller.
With the ability to fly at super-sonic speeds, the talons will prove to be
worthy opponents for the raptors.
"As you can imagine, F-22s are our front line fighter, out there
protecting and ensuring air dominance for our nation and by moving these T-38s here,
we'll be able to more effectively and more efficiently train those pilots
to achieve that air dominance mission" added Miller.
Tyndall's F-22 squadron is the only raptor training squadron in the Air
Force but Tyndall will be receiving an operational F-22 squadron in late 2012
or early 2013.
