HSM-40 is the fleet readiness squadron for US Navy Atlantic Fleet SH-60B and
MH-60R squadrons so the fly both aircraft. We can now the type aircraft
based on their air traffic control callsigns. I have been hearing both HK
4## and HK 0## callsigns and had a working theory that 4##s are SH-60Bs and
0## are MH-60Rs. I recently received word that the HSM-40 SH-60Bs use
sidenumbers 4#3 and that their MH-60Rs use sidenumbers 0##. This supports
the callsign theory. Using the sidenumbers, we can safely ID HSM callsigns
as:
HK 4## = SH-60B
HK 0## = MH-60R
