[MilCom] ADS-B emission type

To the Group -

I'm developing an interest in ADS-B monitoring as an adjunct to MilCom.  
In an attempt to see what type of ADS-B signal reception I might be able 
to get at my location, I thought I might try to receive some ADS-B 
signals "in the rough" with my IC-8500 communications receiver.  
According to several articles I have researched, ADS-B apparently uses 
the frequency 1090 MHz.

Can anyone tell me the following...

 >> If not 1090 MHz, what is the correct frequency for ADS-B?

 >> What type of radio emission is an ADS-B signal (i.e. - what type of 
modulation is it)?

 >> I am currently receiving a WFM signal on 1090 MHz; It is a very 
brief pulse, repeating every 12 seconds. 

Might this be an ADS-B signal?  If not, can anyone shed any light on how 
to best monitor these signals with a standard comm receiver?

I fully understand that a specialized receiver and a PC are necessary to 
decode any intelligence from ADS-B transmissions.  At this point, I 
would just like to see if I can receive ANY related signals at my location.
