I've found that handheld radios have lousy reception inside a commercial 
aircraft; you can barely hear the aircraft you're riding in ... if only 
they'd let us mount antennae outside like they do.  I have only caught 
the air side of the current frequency plus ACARS transmissions (but not 
receptions) on my BC-246t.  I've also tried a Mode-S receiver and had 
zero luck on board; useful while on the ground, but with separation at 
altitude you see nothing.
