By pure coincidence, I was up in Chicago and on driving past the north side of O'Hare,
spotted a pair of 747's over in an area that I think used to be ANG. The light wasn't too
good at that hour but I wondered what the heck they were doing way off in that area.....I got
one good glance and at first I said (not knowing that the Prez was in town) "No way"......
Was in a restaurant and saw them reporting on his being in Chicago and then said "WAY!" :-)
Sunday, we dropped off some friends for their flight back home and got a good daytime
look and my first gut instinct was right - it was indeed SAM 2x000 (couldn't get a good
read on the tail number to see if it was 28000 or 29000) sitting there gleaming in the
sunlight. After we said our goodbyes at the terminal dropoff we hit the parking garage
that is right next to the hotel at the terminal building, and wife snapped away with her
digital SLR from up there. I haven't seen the pix yet as we didn't get back home until
rather late and were both pretty wore out.
(I was surprised that we were never approached by anyone from either TSA or Secret Service about being up there on the top of that garage..........but I'm guessing that we
were probably observed as two control towers had a clear view down on us.........apparently
we looked benign enough. :-) )
Aside from SAM 2x000 there was a short 747 from Evergreen Air which clearly had a
cargo door open on the back left side, and also a dark C17. She shot pix of all three
so we'll see what we get. It was a humid and hazy day and so I have no doubt there will
be some distortions from that as well as heat reflected off all the concrete that was
between us and them............but will probably still have some pretty respectable shots.
First time I've ever seen one of these birds in person - been through the
previous 707-based version at USAF Museum Annex a couple years back.........but an
active one, no.
As for any CAP activity, I was all around Chicago during the weekend and never saw
anything. BUUUUT - I did notice some occasionally "odd" traffic patterns compared to
what I have observed as "normal" over many years.
Added a nice bonus to the weekend..........
