[MilCom] UNIDEN's New Scanner

At first blush, the market for this scanner does not look to be for the
established and knowledgeable scanner enthusiast. I see 2 groups for which
it would be helpful. One are those that were/are overcome by advances in
trunking and digital technologies, and who "gave up" when their local public
safety went to digital trunking systems that they just didn't understand or
have an Elmer-type to help them along. Now they can get back into the game,
IF the new scanner isn't priced out of their social security budget, and IF
it actually works.

Second would be those that travel a lot and just don't want to be bothered
with programming up a fancier radio, but still want to hear some of the
action. Like Jon and Chris said, it won't give them some of the frequencies
that are really used, but it SHOULD give them the main stuff.

As far as milcom listening with this scanner, I don't predict it will have
any noticeable impact to our hobby. Milcom-ers are *generally* more
experienced scanner enthusiasts, and it appears that this receiver is aimed
at the casual or local public safety listener.

Time will tell.

Just one question: how long is that antenna jack going to last with it
hanging off to the side like that? Just an observation from seeing one
photograph. Maybe its sturdier than it looks.
