A Coast Guard spokesman says a helicopter crew has rescued a pilot after 
his single-engine plane crashed off the San Mateo County coast.

Spokesman Dan Dewell says initial reports are that the unidentified 
pilot was flying alone and suffered multiple lacerations when his plane 
went down about 10 miles west of Pillar Point.

The first reports of the crash came in shortly after 3 p.m., and a Coast 
Guard helicopter crew managed to drop a raft and survival gear near the 
pilot soon after.

The pilot was plucked from the ocean by an Air National Guard helicopter 
crew and has been taken to the Coast Guard station at San Francisco 
International Airport.
