2008 Atlantic City air show

Congratulations to the crew of David Schultz Air Shows LLC for putting
on another great flying air show at “Thunder over the Boardwalk” in
Atlantic City. I think 2008 was the second best show they have put on
at this venue. Along with the Thunderbirds there were high performance
demonstrations by the F-16, F-15 and F/A-18F. Schultz also had (for the
first time) the 106th RQS “Perfect Storm” guys down from Long
Island, NY doing a SAR demo. We see these guys every year at the Jones
Beach, NY show. They put on a good demonstration. I hope he has them
back ever year. However, the biggest SURPRISE of the day was having a
four ship of F-22s come up from Langley AFB for fly-bys. There was also
the usually compliment of “Jersey Birds”. Along with a two ship
USCG helo SAR, there were four F-16s from KACY and the heavy’s from
McGuire refueling the fighters. Afterwards the tankers, F-22s and F-16s
went out to Giant Killer to play for about two hours.

I have two criticisms of the show:
1) The NJSP helo demo was VERY disappointing! In years past these guys
have put on an exciting two ship demo with their Bell helicopters. This
year they did a simple flyby with two Bells and a Sikorsky. By what we
heard on the radio, it was obviously unrehearsed. They sounded more
like the Keystone Cops then the State Police! Shame, we were really
looking forward to their demo.
2) For whatever reason, Schultz insists on having an extremely large
area left open for the Golden Knights jump. The Golden Knights (and
Navy Leap Frogs) only require a jump area of 100 x100 feet. There must
be at least 10 times that area cordoned off at this show. That was
compounded by the Chamber of Commerce having the entire beach area in
front of show center closed off to the public. They had sold seats near
the dunes and I guess they wanted those folks to have an unobstructed
view of the show?! It left us regular air show slobs packed in like
sardines on what beach remained.

If you have the opportunity, I would highly recommend this show. It’s
one of my favorite. The area also offers some great monitoring!
