I would say that you are on the right track but there
are some subtleties......IMHO, it depends on just WHO
is doing the yelling and from WHERE.
I don't think that people who are straight
"defense-whackers" are going to be the loudest ones, I
figure that will be reserved for all the anti-nuke
types who will use the "spending" thing as a
smokescreen. You'll know if that's right if any
particular group, from the top of its "hitlist" down,
is pointing almost exclusively at either a nuclear
weapon or a Navy vessel that uses nuclear power (or
other ???? nuke of some sort).
Of course, the fallacy of that whole approach is that
it isn't the HARDWARE that is responsible for the
foulup. That's got to be a 99.9% human failure....and
IMHO we can't afford to draw down the manpower side of
the military any more........
Frankly, I'd like to see us bump back up a bit. Too
many threats and instabilities out there, and too many
of them will find a way to point at the US-of-A.
And frankly, I'll be bold and say that I think a large
part of a bump-up should be in the regular military to
relieve National Guard Units so that THEY can patrol
the boarders of their respective states. And YES, I'm
thinking of places like California, Arizona, Texas in
the more obvious form but also some slightly more
covert work along the northern tier of states to watch
out for troublemakers coming in from Canada.
Different troublemakers, to be sure......
Perhaps "Posse Commitatus" or whatever the heck it is
prevents the regular forces from doing this but I
don't think it prohibits a state's national guard from
certain utilizations within their state.
Who knows, maybe they'd catch some people trying to
get their hands on accidentally misplaced nukes...:-)
