Appears that Oregon Wing received an excellent rating from the USAF during
the recent evaluation exercises that were held. Details on the types of
exercises & resources used can be found at:
http://www.salem-news.com/articles/august312007/cap_usaf_83007.php
What I did finding interesting is one of the evaluation exercises involved
searching for a missing family.
As many of you are aware regarding the James Kim tragedy in Oregon,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Kim
Civil Air Patrol was never asked to provide assistance during the search for
James Kim & his family.
I'm still an advocate of the use of a simple FRS radio, using a
predesignated channel for emergency comms by "lost" individuals to
communicate directly with searchers. Although Personal Locator Beacons (
PLB's) see: http://www.equipped.com/faq_plb/default.asp are the best method,
the cost is prohibitive for most outdoor enthusiasts or the motoring public.
IS CAP in Oregeon using new frequencies & not monitorable by the
public anymore (encryption?), since NO one posted any loggings of last
weekend activities???!!!
