Remember James Kim tragedy in Oregon? Apparently Orgeon & Northern CA
public state officials & volunteers have established a statewide task force
called California/Oregon Regional Search and Rescue (CORSAR) which was
established to improve communications among all s & r personnel

See a recent story relating to the organization including CAP's outstanding
support at:
http://www.mailtribune.com/archive/2007/0320/local/stories/airsearch.htm

Now I would have thought that the surviving pilot could have manually
switched on the ELT to providing a homing signal for aircraft but this
didn't happen.

Perhaps Mr. Kim's death did result in some changes to S&R procedures. See
the following link for an ongoing/background information on Mr. Kim:

Again, personally, I think a cheap $15.00 1/2 watt FRS radio tuned to
channel 1 (462.5625 mhz) is still a viable backup system if all else
fails!!!
