[MilCom] FRS etc at airshows

Just in case the previous attempt with this as an
attachment doesn't make it through.....

Personally, if nobody else was going to step up and
make a suggestion for FRS calling freqs, why not just
adopt Ken's suggestion? I don't think it's any worse
or better than anything else with one caveat - there
are still some FRS radios in service that do not HAVE
"Privacy Codes" in them. While they will receive
anything on the channels indicated, people who have
those codes turned ON will most likely NOT *hear*
transmissions from the radios without code capability.
It's whatcha call a "legacy issue", much like in the
Amateur bands (notably like 2 meter repeaters) there
are still 2 meter rigs floating about and in service
without PL (CTCSS) capability. In our local 2-meter
net, we usually shut down the PL for the net so those
folks can get in....not that there are that
many....... :-)

(segueway........) :-)

Speaking of the Amateurs as Don was, 146.52 is a
recognized national simplex frequency. However, to
minimize the posssibility of interference to Amateurs
local to a given show, why not use 146.49 ? This is
also (in many areas) a recognized simplex freq but its
use isn't so widespread as 146.52.

The downside to FRS use is that there are a bazillion
rug rats running about whose parents have handed them
a pair of FRS radios as "walkie talkies", and they
have no sense of radio ettiquette at all because their
parents have no clue about what they're doing. (worse
yet is when the parents buy them GMRS handhelds and
ignore the licensing issue.....) With FRS being an
UNlicensed service, the kiddies unfortunately have as
much right to "use" (in too many cases that = "ABuse")
the frequencies as any of us do. Last airshow I took
a FRS radio to, I very quickly just turned it off and
shoved it in my backpack, because EVERY channel was SO
full of undisciplined "kiddie crap" that FRS was
rendered effectively unuseable.

I hope that's not true everywhere - but in the
meantime, how about some folks give those two channels
a tryout? Ken appears to be trying to put some
organized effort together, perhaps the benefit of the
doubt should be given..... NOTE - some FRS channels
are also GMRS channels, and an unlicensed user is, the
last time I looked, *required* to yield such a channel
to a licensed user.
