Unfortunately, this has been a problem with commercial pilots
as well.

There have been reports (even one in my area of DFW) of
a commercial jet on approach, and the pilot and copilot
blinded by someone on the ground shooting a laser pointer
at the aircraft. Teens see this as harmless fun, but when
you're endangering the lives of possibly hundreds of
passengers, it's not harmless fun!.

Tracking down the culprit though is a completely different
and difficult matter, like finding a needle in a haystack.
People tend to talk though, which gets them in trouble.

However, messing with (as others have said) a military
aircraft with laser targeting makes the search much
easier.
