Apparently Civil Air Patrol performs an over water patrol and based upon the
article may very well use radio communications on the VHF Marine band to
communicate with USCG fixed stations & boats.
I always thought the USCG Auxiliary also had some aero resources (owned by
individual members) that they used on patrol's of this type. Perhaps there
really isn't too many USCG Auxiliary aircraft available for these missions.
Anyone heard CAP activity on the VHF Marine Band? I would assume that
CAPFLT XXXX (3 or 4 digits?) might be used. "Monitoring Times" magazine
June 2007 edition MT Help Desk Column has a listing of all Wing (states)
aero callsigns. Of course the typical aero frequencies would be used in
that area also e.g. 118.0 NY Approach, etc. (Looking at my new VFR chart I
can't seem to figure out all the frequencies.
BTW Great Work CAP!!! Glad you observed that boat sinking & coordinated the
rescue effort with the USCG. Of course, remember that CAP is always
looking for volunteers check out the website: http://cap.findlocation.com/
for the unit(s) closest to your location. Perhaps you too could be flying
one of those missions in the future!!!
