It is Mon, 1:40pm EDT (1740).
"Air Transport 530," a USAF contractor DC-8, has just departed Patrick AFB
on his weekly trip to the down-range Eastern Test Range sites: Antigua and
Ascension. Some of you might remember, as I do, the good old Gemini-Apollo days
when the supply aircraft flew to many many downrange sites that have since
fallen victim to obsolescence by tracking technology. Remember all those
Zantop DC-6 cargo planes that would park along Patrick's fenceline on A-1A near
old hangar 800 that has also disappeared?
I consider my most fortunate circumstance was to have been born in
America. My second more fortunate circumstances was to have lived in Cocoa Beach
during the Gemini and Apollo programs. You had to be there to understand.
