Over 100 members of the former 90th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing returned
to Topeka more than fifty years after it was stationed in Topeka. Friday
morning, a full military memorial service honored decease members of the
WWII bomber wing.
A motorcade from Topeka Capital Plaza to the main entrance of the 190th Air
Refueling Wing, and the actual service was held in Hanger 662. Bill Bunten
opened the program.
The Adjutant General of Kansas, Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting will be the guest
speaker at a military banquet Friday night.
The 90th SRW formed in 1942 as the 90thth Bomb Group, flying B-24
"Liberator" bomber aircraft. Fighting in the Pacific Theater during WWII,
the 90th achieved fame as the "Jolly Roger Group," accumulating 13 Battle
Stars and two Distinguished Unit Citations. The unit was initially
deactivated in 1946, only to be reinstated four years later at Fairchild Air
Force Base, Wash. In 1960 the colors of the 90th were officially retired and
the wing deactivated.

have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence
from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own
government."
