National Guard.

The Air Force bid farewell to a Langley-based unit
that played a big role on September 11, 2001.

The North Dakota Air National Guard 119th Fighter
Wing, Detachment One, has been at Langley for six
years.

On 9/11, "the Happy Hooligans," as they're called,
scrambled to Washington, D.C. following the attacks on
the world trade center.

The F-16's arrived just minutes after the attack on
the Pentagon.

Since then, the fighter wing has been conducting east
coast air sovereignty missions.

Now, it’s time to go home.

"Mostly, you look back a little finally at our shared
experience. But looking ahead is the way of life and
that's where I think we should all look. Mission
complete, Detachment One, well done," said LCol.
Marshall Kjelvik, ND ANG 119th Fighter Wing,
Detachment One commander.

Taking over the Langley-based mission is the 158th
Fighter Wing from the Vermont Air National Guard.
