With all due respect to Mark R. in Georgia, and Fencecheck members , I
gathered from a reliable source during the Sunset events that the last Tomcat will
depart Oceana on
Weds. October 4th., most fittingly to the Grumman Iron Works at Bethpage,
Long Island.
I personally counted five there on Saturday, Sept. 23. A sixth VF-31 bird,
(107) which
flew for the final flight ceremony transitioned to an exercise area off the
coast and recovered at Chambers Fld. only to return to Oceana sometime later.
Maybe during this official final day the powers that be will permit the
greatest airshow fighter ever to really show its stuff for those who will be in
attendance so as not to offend the very sensitive F-18 community.
The weather forecast looks good for this day. All ears and eyes be ready for
this sad day in American military aviation history.
