Hello Hobbyists:
Haven't seen very many log postings about monitoring Civil Air Patrol
Aircraft. Callsign typically is CAPFLIGHT (nationwide assignment) followed
by a four or five digit number, with the first two digits indicating the
wing. So for example Massachusetts Wing's designation would start with 19
followed by two additional digits. I typical hear CAPFLIGHT 1923 & 1928
(Cessna 172's) for the units in my area.
Public source information seems to indicate that Civil Air Patrol aircraft
may be changing their callsign for certain missions
For example for "High Bird" (communications relay) mission a static callsign
CAPFLIGHT XXXX might be used in each wing. When the aircraft is flying to
the "on station" location they will use their typical aircraft unique
CAPFLIGHT callsign (for FAA purposes) BUT for CAP & other radio systems will
use that specific highbird static CAPFLIGHT callsign
Additionally CAP will no longer identify there mission bases by geographic
locations/functions BUT by a tactical callsign. It's unclear whether that
is going be a typical CAP callsign assigned to that wing OR some other
designation e.g. ATLAS BASE. Functional callsigns e.g. Ground Team #1, etc
can still be used on low power radios (such as the Intersquad Radios).
Civil Air Patrol aircraft normally use FAA VHF aero frequencies (rather than
UHF aero) & may also be simplex on the any of the typical 4 CAP FM
frequencies: 148.125 (repeater talk around), 148.15 (repeater talkaround),
148.1375 (ground teams), & 149.5375 (air to ground, mission base, air/air
tactical). In addition VHF aero, 121.9 (Mulitcom practice missions) &
123.10 (actual missions) may be use.
So if you can please give a listen and report back to the list on the Civil
Air Patrol callsigns (both aero specific) & other state specific callsigns
your are monitoring...
Thanks!!!
Ken
