Long ago in a galaxy far far away, SAC MAC and TAC went away causing SAC
Giant Talk and GCCS (along with several others) to merge. Freqs were changed,
NOTAM's sent. At RADAY on the night/day of the change, several planes took-off
being SAC assets and landed belonging to ACC.
I was at the SAC Giant Talk Station at Elkhorn Nebraska. In all the
evolution a Cobra Ball mission was airborne and went to send an ops normal on a
primary SAC frequency that, as of RADAY, was no longer being monitored and heard
nothing but crickets. They finally worked there way through a freq list until
they got someone to answer the phone, only to be told and I quote, " we don't
do that any more".
When I came into work at 2300 local time. There was a CMSgt on a STU III and
an Lt Col looking over his shoulder. Autodin messages from Airstaff were
flowing like water and we were monitoring a whole bunch more frequencies than we
were before.
Someone dropped the ball on getting the word out to the flying squadrons.
There were several levels of failures as is typical in situations like this.

But interesting question - would not all of the East Coast squadrons have
been advised of any changes? I can believe (but don't want to) that the Air
Force (ANG?) did this on their own - but in that case they should be
"answering the phone" and advising the units of the new procedures.
Damn good thing there isn't a "real" message to pass about inbound hostiles!
