"Springfield Republican" , 12/31/06 edition "New Gate Debuts at Westover
Base"

Highlights:

*Effective tomorrow new enhanced gate entry requiring a (sharp) left turn
off Westover Rd (Chicopee)

*Enhanced security gate complex includes a vehicle inspection facility, pass
& registration office, & gate guard shack.

*Base Personnel now expecting guest will have to meet them at the complex.

*James St gate (Chicopee) open only to those with proper identification
(military/civilian ID cards & vehicle decals), all others must report to
Westover Rd Complex.

BTW the picture in the newspaper shows the new AF emblem (not AF reserve)
along with the words U.S AIR FORCE Westover Air Reserve Baes (and not joint
air reserve base with all the service emblems).

As a side note the base opened the new $3.8 million dollar Security Forces
headquarters building.

Over 1 year ago all base support nets, including security changed to new VHF
high band frequencies and implemented a digital (P25 compatible) radio
system. Security forces operate on a repeater system, & up to 3 channels
have so far been identified, with some hobbyists thinking that up to 10
security channels may be available for use. Encryption will be implemented
in the near future.

Overall Westover JARB has not been friendly to "on scene" milcom/milair
hobbyists. Generally any lingering at any base perimeter fencing results in
response, identification, and a move on order with the assistance of
local/state law enforcement departments and on "rare" occasions the
specialized airport security surveillance & response teams (SASSRT) (many
local hobbyists are still trying to find these teams' frequencies!!!).
