KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two jetliners flying from New York to San Francisco made
emergency landings Tuesday within minutes of each other about 200 miles
apart.
A Delta Airlines 737 landed safely at Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita,
Kan., at 11:06 a.m. after one of its engines failed. A few minutes earlier,
a United Airlines 757 landed at Kansas City International Airport after the
pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.
Officials at Mid-Continent Airport said the Boeing jet was carrying 131
passengers and crew. They said it landed safely six to 10 minutes after the
engine failed.
The Boeing 757 jetliner that landed in Kansas City was carrying 119
passengers and crew members. The source of the smoke was not immediately
known.
Both airports deployed rescue and firefighting units, but they were not
needed.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
