[MilCom] Rod versus Rodd Callsign

Gentlemen,
His callsign could indeed be "Rod" but for ATC purposes he might need to
spell it "RODD" for the controller to pull the correct flight plan out of
the computer. "ROD" is the three letter designator for a Mexican Airline
"Aerodan", like "UAL" is for United Airlines. I would guess that Military
call signs can't duplicate those three letter designators assigned by the
FAA
I've also heard some funky spelling for longer call signs, like the NJ ANG
177th FW "Cosmic" being spelled "COSMK". I would say this is due to there
only being 5 letters allowed in the ATC system, but I'm not sure..."
Perhaps there's an ATC type lurking who can fill us in...
