A friend of mine called me to look at some pictures of an antenna farm he
had taken. He wanted to know what ham could afford this.
There are two towers. The first appears to be at least 200 feet tall and is
unlighted. It has six yagi antenna on it and the tower is rotatable. Four
yagis appear to be in the 6-8 MHz range and the other two appear to be in
the 10-15 MHz range. Each antenna is fed with a different feedline that
appears to be over an inch in diameter. All of the antennas are pointed in
the same direction. At the time that the picture was taken they appear to
be pointed to the Middle East. There is a guy point just below each antenna
that appears to be a bearing for tower rotation.
The second antenna is mounted on a crank up tower that appears to be 75 or
so feet tall.
This is located in South Carolina just off of State Road 30 near Bozard
Drive. The coordinates are 33-42-18N, 80-52-30W.
I suspect that this is a military installation. However it is on a farm.
The only visible buildings are a house and a barn. The antennas are near
the barn. He said that there is no obvious security other than outside
cameras on the barn.
This installation went in less than three weeks ago.
Any ideas as to what the antenna farm is for?
I feel that this is military due to the cost to install such a tall
rotatable tower and the size of the antennas used. If I remember correctly
each antenna had six elements and they were braced to the tower with guy
lines from the tower to each end of the antenna.
