When you install a discriminator tap, you are bringing the raw signal out before it gets amplified and reshaped by the audio stages. This is most necessary when dealing with data streams that would otherwise be unreadable.
Its main use by hobbyists is to feed what is often referred to as a data slicer (some folks call it a level converter). This changes the signal (which is also referred to as baseband audio) to a RS232 signal that can be interpreted by programs such as Trunker, UniTrunker, Etrunker and several other applications that are specifically prohibited by Federal Law.
As you might have guessed from the names, packages such as Trunker allow you to read the data channel of a trunking system and examine such useful information as the user IDs and other information.
