A discriminator tap is an electrical point to connect a zero center meter. It will tell you if you are tuned exactly to the carrier frequency of the station you are listening to. It is useful in reporting true frequencies. 

In other words, if you are listening to a station on 262.26 MHz, but the zero center meter is pointing to the positive side, it means that the actual frequency of the station you are receiving is really higher than the 262.26 MHz shown on your readout, it maybe 262.265 MHz. The same is true in the negative direction, only the frequency may be lower, maybe 262.25Mhz.

The more expensive receivers like the Icom R-7000, & R-9000 have them.
