My first scanner that was capable of monitoring UHF aero/VHF tactical (am)
was the Radio Shack Pro 2004, purchased in 1985 (actually it's still running
every day in my monitoring post)..... Prior to that I had used a BC101 & BC
210XLT that allowed me to monitor the AF military bases intrabase radio nets
(generally in the 162-175 mhz band, with a spattering in the 148-150 mhz
band).
Just wondering what the time line has been for hobbyists monitoring military
aero type communications (e.g. VHF tacticals, UHF aero, etc.)
*When did hobbyists first start to monitor milcom activity (especially in
the UHF aero/VHF tacticals band)?
*What type of equipment was initially used? (Wasn't the RS Pro 2003 the
first UHF aero capabable scanner?)
*What publications were loggings & frequency information first published in?
I know that Tom Kneitel (CRB Research Books Inc) was probably the first
writer to publish a comprehensive frequency directory (that covered military
frequencies) "The 'Top Secret' Registry of U.S. Government Radio
Frequencies", starting in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1990 with the
final edition printed in 1993... There also were some local/regional
frequency guides in the 1980's that covered some military communications
(e.g. "Sacramento County (CA) Frequency Outline" (1983), Scanner Master
"Metro D.C./Baltimore Guide (1985) (albeit more intra base radio support
nets than aero), Scanner Master "Massachusetts Guide" 3rd edition (very
limited)...
I would imagine that the Radio Communications Monitoring Association (RCMA)
was covering this in their newsletters over the years, but again I don't
know the overall time line.
Perhaps some seasoned monitors could provide additions to the milcom
monitoring time line. (also ad HF monitoring if you want)?!!
