is this one of those 1/4-wave wire antennas with a suction cup on each
lead or just the dual-cup mount?

The wire antenna is simply a piece of coax with the 2 connectors
separated for a length equal to 1/4-wave of the frequency you're
monitoring. You've probably seen them for sale on That Auction Place.
The conductors have a suction cup at the end to mount on the window in
any configuration you like.

I'm wondering how much of an improvement will be gained with a 1/2-wave
version of this. You can essentially stick it on your windshield
without it being too visible. (I prefer large mag-mounts on the roof,
but I don't do on-scene monitoring)

Perhaps someone who knows more about antennas can enlighten us.

I would think that anything at all would be an improvement over the
duck.

Best of luck.
