[MilCom] Lightning protection?

I would like to hear from radio operators and monitors in areas of large
amounts of lightning and electrostatic discharge monitoring or operating on
HF.  What types of equipment do you use for protection, rods, brushes?  Does
this increase static noise in your receivers or is the potential kept low
enough to not be a problem?  What about sharp corners or points on towers
very close to antennas?  How about rods or brushes 100 - 300 feet away?
