BTW, has anyone had any luck in monitoring P25 digital
skip?

yes in south dakota on a good day with ducting
i can receive SD state TDRS 150-200 as the crow flies
miles on average, 
i can get some a that are 35-45miles most of the time
,
and sometimes the ellsworth TDRS that is 140 mhz range
also 200 straight line miles,
