This is what I know. It's truly sad to something like this happen
-Michele
The pilot, Sean deRosier, was flying "Sky Rocker," a yellow and blue custom
acrobatic plane that has been featured at air shows across the West.
The crash occurred at about 10:15 a.m., about 45 minutes after the air show
started.
Emergency crews responded immediately and deRosier was alive when he was
pulled from the wreckage. He was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital. The
31-year-old pilot died of massive injuries at the hospital with his parents
by his side.
All air show activities were suspended for about 2 hours.
About 300 spectators were in the audience; there were no reports of any
civilians injured. Witnesses told 10News they heard a large "thud" sound
when the crash occurred. They said deRosier was in the process of a loop
maneuver, lost power and "pancaked" to the ground.
"He was doing a steep climb and he stalled out at the top of the climb. He
came down and got airspeed toward the bottom and he just didn't pull up fast
enough. He started to pull the nose up, but he was too close to the ground
and he pancaked into the ground," witness Frank Rideg said.
In hopes of learning more about the crash, officials from the National
Transportation Safety Board are asking spectators who caught the crash on
tape to hand it over to military officials, 10News reported.
The annual air show attracts thousands of spectators and features civilian
and military aircraft.
The single-engine aircraft was made by the Rihn Aircraft Corp. and was a
modified model from its DR series. The 900-pound, 210 horsepower plane has a
maximum level speed of 184 mph.
