[MilCom] Help in the MidWest

Matt's suggestion will work - an extra helper on this one is to get it
as high in the air as you can within your "confines", and/or the closer to
a window or exterior wall you can get will also help. Within that set
of parameters, get it as far AWAY from a TV or computer or computer monitor
as you possibly can. Most consumer electronics generate horrid amounts
of trash in the HF range. Compact Flourescent lights *can*, but I can tell
you that this is not absolute. I have two identical ones in my garage, and
one of them generates broadband crap - the other does NOT.

Indoor antennas can be a bitch, but with patience identifying interference
sources (usually meaning you turn things off while you listen until you
find the one or ones making the biggest noises) and tweaking the physical
location of the antenna you can do some pretty good signal sniffing with
them.

Mine also get used for transmitting, too, on the Amateur HF bands so I can
tell you that you CAN achieve remarkable results. I will also suggest a
good preselector and if you can find one with a good low-noise preamp, so
much the better.

For an HF antenna, maybe some magnet wire tacked to the ceiling. It's hair
thin and almost invisible. Radio Shack sells a couple hundred feet for five
dollars.
