Unfortunately, some of these problems originate at
hamfests. Since I work in an electronic repair shop,
after every hamfest in the area I get some idiot with
one or more HT's that are "rocked" in some business
band freq., marine channel or ham band wanting a "fix"
or a "mod" or a "peak-n-tune". I turn them all away
and tell them that (as appropriate for the specific radio)
if they don't have a license they shouldn't be using it,
shouldn't be buying it, and shouldn't ever darken my
doorstep again unless they would like a visit from
the FCC.
When I GO to hamfests, I don't see ANYone asking to
see a ham license when selling ham gear. I was utterly
aghast at Dayton this year to see how much ham gear was
sold to people who had cash but never were asked for any
ID.
I will give credit to AES in Milwaukee - if I call to
order something, they always and I mean ALWAYS ask for
my callsign right up front. I do not know if that means
he is looking at a Buckmaster disc, or QRZ.com or what,
but at least they ASK.
This goes for dealers as well as individuals out in the
flea market. I shudder to think how many illicit radio
purchases are made at hamfests........of course, I often
wonder why I see so much marine and business band gear
being OFFERED for sale there.
As individual hams, we have no right bitching about "dealers"
if we will not get our own house in order too.
(and god only knows how many unlicensed GMRS radios are
running around out there......what I hear on that and FRS
is often 100 times worse than anything I ever heard on
CB)
